About PDF password protection

This tool adds a password prompt when a PDF is opened and creates a protected copy separate from the original. Use it to add an access restriction before sharing a document.

The PDF is read in your browser. This tool does not send or store the file on Web Toolarium's server. Processing may take time or fail depending on the file and browser.

When it can help

  • Sharing contracts or quotes: Add an opening password to a document you want to share with selected people.
  • Documents with personal information: Use it as one access restriction when sharing a PDF containing names or addresses.
  • Managing internal documents: Prepare documents for colleagues or partners by adding a barrier to unintended viewing.
  • Creating a copy for sharing: Create a separate password-protected PDF while keeping the original file.

How to use

  1. Choose a PDF file or drag and drop it into the area.
  2. Enter a password. The current form requires at least 8 characters.
  3. Select “Encrypt and save” to process the PDF.
  4. Save the resulting “_locked.pdf” file and share its password separately.

Choosing a password

  • Avoid easy-to-guess details such as names or birthdays.
  • Do not reuse a password from another service.
  • Use at least 8 characters; a longer password is preferable.
  • Store it securely so you can retrieve it when needed.

Important notes

  • This tool cannot recover a forgotten password.
  • The original PDF is left unchanged; a separate protected file is created.
  • Errors may occur depending on the PDF, its format, or your browser.
  • Keep a copy of important PDFs before processing them.
  • Do not rely on a password alone; also protect how the file is shared and stored.

Password protection and removal

This page adds a password to a PDF. To make an unprotected copy of a PDF when you know its correct password, use the Remove PDF password.
