EARTHQUAKE TREND

Earthquake count over time

Time is on the horizontal axis and earthquake counts on the vertical axis. Events in the selected region are stacked by magnitude band.

M7.0+ M6.0–6.9 M5.0–5.9 M4.0–4.9 M3.0–3.9 M2.0–2.9 Under M2.0 Unknown magnitude

Coverage of small earthquakes varies by region.

Updates:This page checks its API every 60 seconds. The server retrieves earthquake data from USGS every 2 minutes. The last retrieval time and sync status appear below the map.

Caution:Earthquake reports may be preliminary. Epicenter location, depth, magnitude, and other values can change later.

About this tool

Earthquakes worldwide,
on a map and over time.

Explore public USGS earthquake data on a map and charts. See global event locations or examine earthquakes and changes over time in a region of interest.

When to use itUse it to check questions such as “Where have earthquakes occurred recently?” or “How are earthquake counts changing around Japan?”

MAPHow to use the map

  • Choose time and filters:Filter earthquakes by period and magnitude, then color them by magnitude, depth, or time since the event. The default is the past 24 hours and all magnitudes.
  • Explore places and earthquakes:Pan and zoom the map, using +, −, or Reset to adjust the view. Circle size represents magnitude. Select a marker or list item for the time, depth, tsunami flag, and other details. Toggle plate boundaries with the checkbox above the map.
  • Use the list and playback:“Show earthquakes on map only” filters the list to the current map bounds. The initial view plays the past 24 hours automatically. Pause, move through time with the slider, return to the start, or switch back to live data.

CHARTHow to use the chart

  • Choose a region and period:Choose a region and 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days. Chart region and period are independent of the map bounds and map filters.
  • Read the trend:Counts are grouped hourly for 24 hours, every 6 hours for 7 days, and daily for 30 days. Colored bands show counts by magnitude, with larger magnitudes at the bottom.
  • Inspect each interval:Hover over or select a time interval to see counts by magnitude and the total. Chart times use Japan Standard Time. The chart shows change over time within a region and is not intended to compare counts between regions.

This tool visualizes public USGS earthquake data. It does not provide earthquake early warnings, tsunami alerts, or other emergency alerts. In an emergency, follow official guidance from the relevant authorities.
